Been a while since I did one of these. I still have like 20+ to do, including several I owe people for various reasons. :P I'm zippyfast at art when I'm in the mood for it, but I'm slow otherwise.

Leytonstone has, at last, joined the rest of the Northern hemisphere and experienced a snowfall.

Looked quite pretty as we came out of the post-rehearsal session at The Royal Oak. Don't know if I will enjoy it quite as much when more has settled tomorrow morning.

I’m always pleased when folks write (or Twitter) showing me how they’re enjoying their Wondermark tangibles, or (especially) how the folks they’ve gifted them to are enjoying them! This comes courtesy of Jeff, who has very handsomely framed one of my prints for his brother William:

I am not sure if William is cosplaying as the character in the comic or if I simply channeled him as I made it. (Minor note: this is an older style of comic print; the ones I offer now are somewhat larger and come unsigned.)

Twitter’s also great for getting these sorts of notifications — here are some other pics folks have slung my way recently (click each for their source):

Lastly, this picture of “Bones” comes from Erin, a medical librarian at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center (and recipient of a Thanksgiving Project book), proving that there is in fact a place for my personal unlicensed-and-highly-specious brand of medicine in today’s medical establishment:

Finally, Davey has someone to play with.

Thanks for the pics, everyone! And if you have (or can take) pictures of yourself or others sporting any manner of Wondermark accoutrement, please send them to pics[at]topatoco.com — we love seeing that stuff, and it helps future customers see what the goods actually look like on living, breathing, flesh-and-blood human beings! (Nothing personal, there, Bones.)

There is chaos and thunder in my every step and lightning, hotter than the sun, flashes behind my eyes. Animal fear sloughs off my skin, crinkling like foil wrap. Rising up like a climbing vine, like an epiphyte. Eyeslits narrow and teeth glimmer in the dark. Eager for fun, ze wears a smile. Transmutating from hardware to elseware, from the labyrinth to the still point, from logic gates to the self-oscillating filter. Lattice in wonderland.

Bring on the psychedelia!

But I need somewhere to put them.  I'm looking for a non-sleeping share in a room that I can prep and serve decadent gourmet meals out of.  I need table and counter space, plus enough floor for a large cooler.   Host this in your room on site, and you and yours get fed all weekend.

I also home roast my own coffee, and will be bringing an Aeropress mini espresso set, a burr grinder and assorted filters and presses with which to serve delectable brews.  Get hold of me ahead of time, and I will custom blend and roast a batch to your personal tastes, just before I start driving for the con.  Fresh roast is love.

When I say "decadent gourmet meals" I mean there is stuff on the menu like wild duck breasts with black truffle demiglace, venison cold cuts with caper-anchovy mayonnaise, five-spice cake with buttermilk-yuzu frosting, chocolate cake with lavender and cardamom, venison mincemeat pie with holiday spiced brandycream, roast turkey with Thai-inspired coconut and kaffir lime cranberry sauce, walnut carrot cake with ginger-lime frosting, brandied venison pate, blood sausage with aniseed and fennel,  braised red cabbage with caraway and juniper berries, German mock potato salad, "Kenya Mud" espresso chocolate truffle balls, low carb cornbread with "pulled possum" wild game BBQ, and probably a few more interesting side dishes.   I'm baking with local farm fresh eggs and butter, and cooking with locally harvested wild game, and pretty much everything is low carb including most of the cakes and pastries.  What carbs are involved come from natural sources that are not sugar.  Some of the pastries (not all) are also flourless, vegan and gluten free, but you probably wouldn't know which ones if you ate them and nobody told you.

[info]admnaismith has first dibs to say yea or nay, and after that it's open season.  I can't quite feed the entire con, but a full house won't be a stretch as long as everyone in the room is okay trading the table and countertop space for meals all weekend.  I do need a room key, but I will definitely be courteous and considerate about times to access the room since I won't be sleeping there.   If our meal times coincide I'm happy to serve up a well coordinated artistic plate to order, if they don't, there will be prepackaged portions of the various goodies and you can select and reheat your own combinations, or grab from the cold cuts plate.

Drop a note in my inbox if you want to make a deal with the culinary devil.  ;)

Stats from December:

Active Volunteer count (volunteers who touched the board 5 times):

* Week ending Dec 28: 33
* Week ending today (Jan 4): 31

Please tell me to what degree I need to be panicking at this moment! :x

I know, usually people are busy at the holidays, but usually that's counterbalanced by people who have more free time at the holidays. As I was on vacation for most of this period (my TMJ is much much better with the new splint, thanks! :) ), I didn't have, as I usually do, an intuitive feel on what the morale atmosphere was like, and I don't want to guess because my guesses about how things were have been embarrassingly wrong several times already today, and I've only been "back" for about 4 hours. :-p

Comments are screened by default because I need you to be as honest as possible; tell me if you would like the comment unscreened. And please speak only for yourself: broad generalizations such as "lots of people didn't do support because of $blah" doesn't help me because I don't know who you're talking about and therefore can't verify if it's true or just amplified rumors.

On this post, I'm interested in hearing from the current crop of support volunteers, not the ones who have moved on to other things or never volunteered to begin with.

Also, I'm not finished catching up with my vacation-email yet, and I see a few of you did email me related to support activity, so I will see those too and answer them as soon as I can. And if this is indeed just a holiday blip, there is no guilt allowed here! By all means, reassure me that you avoided Support because you were spending time with your loved ones! That's a very important thing for you to do. :-)

As far as "goal for the week" I'm looking at this stat from today's email:

Technical Support: 570 came in this week, 559 last week, representing a +1% change. 137 of the 325 currently open requests are new this week (57% are from previous weeks). Requests this week waited for an average of 57 hours for responses.

Let's focus this week on those 57% from previous weeks, and work together to clean out the December backlog. Please join us in #lj_support for degreening company this week! I'll do my best to get caught up as quickly as I can, then we can all get bugs filed, fixed, and out the door throughout the next month. And thank you to all of you who kept the wheels turning while I was away. :-)

Arrived in Tokyo last night. I guess I forgot that this place is so awesome.

I'm staying in Bunkyo ward again (in the same ryokan as last time), but just until work starts on the 6th. It's a very quiet, pleasant corner of the city, so it's the perfect place to relax for a couple days before work. (And it's a college town--right next to Tokyo University--so it's rife with nice little places to eat.)

Eevee [userpic]

Between digging through old files and playing with the Wayback Machine, I've managed to dig up code and designs for old versions of my Pokédex.

I also found the only record of a starting date: November 19, 1999.

Ten years, one month, and fifteen days ago.

Jesus.

Anyway, I compiled a list of the beast's history, complete with live demos of every single design I could recover. (Screenshots at the bottom. Below all the words.) Some of you may remember the eevee.racso.com days, but I don't believe a single person I know today has ever seen the old white-on-black Pokédex.

There's also an overview of how the code/data evolved, which pretty well tracks my improvement as a programmer. The moral of this story is that I'm going to start slapping people who lament to me that they can't do cool things because they don't know x y z like I do. Believe it or not, I had to learn it!

So. Enjoy.

Now the mundane part of the New Year is really upon me, (work tomorrow), I am looking at ways to make sure that I really *do* an hour of voice practice every day.

Noodling about with bits and pieces I might (or might not) do in the future just does not cut it. Managed about an hour and a half today, and I'm glad to say that there were times that I was getting the sound I wanted on the sections of 'Iolanthe' that I am preparing.

As it was, most of my time was the very boring, (to listeners), process of getting clean intervals on different vowels with a resonant tone. Gradually I am absorbing the stuff SB is trying to convey to me, although often when I think I have got the feel of something, it goes again. In some ways this reminds me of training in martial arts; just when I thought I had absorbed a point of technique, I tried it again, and it wasn't there.

Of course, the answer is to _keep_on_practicing_ - and this will be my repeated mantra for the newly-minted year. Not sure how far I will go with developing the tenor voice, but the only way to find out is to reach my limit (wherever that may be).

Okay then! Besides it now being 2038, there have been some big changes in my life. First off, Rocket will not be happy with me and Arch when they finally discover what we did; bargained with PIA for amnesty and protection in exchange for info. Well Arch, being the crazy bird that he is, one upped the cops and gave them his father, a recently battered (G'DAMN that was fun!) Elite Honchkrow by the name of Daemon. Bastard is lucky he was our bargaining chip; he dented my back armor, bruised my kidney, and likely broke a rib or two. I just hope to Arceus that the cops can prevent him from getting away. We'll all be royally screwed if he manages to get back to Rocket. Also, I'm SO looking forward to seeing Millie! Nevermind that it'll be through a jail cell. But hey, at least it's voluntary imprisonment. Anyways, I look forward to my new life with Mills and possibly, if I play my cards right, with the PIA!

It's a new ice age! Man, these past days have been terribly cold, and there's LOTS AND LOTS OF SNOW! About 30 cm, everywhere! Our cars are completely snowed under, and it's useless to wipe it all away, since it keeps snowing every night. Not to mention it's way below freezing point.
